The Search Engine Visibility screen in Category Curves provides insights into the visibility of search features (or widgets) within the keywords in a category. This view helps users understand which search features dominate the SERPs for the selected filters and how often domains appear in these widgets.

How Search Engine Visibility Works

Widget Visibility Overview:

  • On page load, SiteCurve defaults to Organic Listings (traditional blue links) and displays a summary of all widgets found for the category and its keywords.

  • The bar chart visualizes the Visibility % of each widget over time, showing how prevalent they are across the category.

Filter by Widget:

  • Users can filter the view to specific widgets such as AI Overviews, People Also Ask, Featured Snippets, or others.

  • Filtering updates the trend chart to focus solely on the visibility of the chosen widget.

Keyword and Domain Insights:

  • Keywords Button: Clicking this reveals all the keywords for which the selected widget appears, alongside how often the widget was found for each keyword.

  • Domains Button: Displays a leaderboard of domains ranked by their prevalence in the widget, ordered by how often they "owned" or appeared in the widget.

Leaderboard View:

  • The table provides detailed metrics for each widget, including:

    • Visibility %: How frequently the widget appeared.

    • Owned %: The share of the widget "owned" by the domain.

    • Change %: Variations in widget presence over time.

Key Metrics on the Search Engine Visibility Screen

  • Visibility %: The proportion of keywords in the category where the widget appears.

  • Owned %: The percentage of times a domain was present within a widget.

  • Keywords: The total number of keywords associated with the widget.

  • Domains: The number of unique domains appearing in the widget for the selected filters.

Why Use Search Engine Visibility in Category Curves

  1. Identify Dominant Search Features: Learn which widgets (e.g., Featured Snippets, People Also Ask) are most prevalent in the category, helping prioritize optimization efforts.

  2. Track Domain Presence: See which competitors dominate specific widgets and evaluate their strategies.

  3. Optimize for SERP Features: Adjust content strategies to align with highly visible widgets.

Best Practices for Using Search Engine Visibility

  • Organic Listings, then drill into specific widgets like AI Overviews or Shopping to uncover opportunities.

  • Analyze Widget Trends: Use the trend chart to track changes in widget visibility over time and identify new growth opportunities.

  • Leverage Domain Insights: Study the domains that frequently appear in key widgets to emulate successful strategies.

  • Combine with Keyword Insights: Cross-reference keywords with widget appearances to fine-tune content for specific SERP features.

FAQs About Search Engine Visibility

What does "Owned %" mean?

It represents how often a domain was present in the widget for the keywords within the category.

Can I see which keywords triggered a specific widget?

Yes, clicking the Keywords button reveals all relevant keywords and how often the widget appeared for each.

How does SiteCurve determine widget visibility?

Widget visibility is calculated based on the number of times a search feature was found across the keywords in the category. If there are 100 keywords within a category and we found the featured snippet widget on 50 of those 100 keywords the visibility % for the day would be 50%. If the next day we find the featured snippet widget on 55 keywords out of 100, then it would go up to 55%.

What happens when I filter by a widget like Featured Snippets?

The trend chart updates to show visibility over time for just that widget, and the leaderboard highlights metrics specific to it.

Does the widget data include ads?

Yes, though our data on paid ads in Google is limited.
